Since the Fall of 2014, CALO YouthBuild has been organizing to address the issue of gentrification and displacement in Boyle Heights. We believe that stable housing is a human right and a necessary foundation for a community to thrive.
In order to address these issues, we have conducted research, published articles, and conducted community presentations. We have shared our policy proposals with Metro and the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council. Together with a coalition of youth and artists, we were able to stop the re-development of Mariachi Plaza and slow down surrounding developments.
If there are developments in Boyle Heights, we believe they should be made in a way that sustains the existing community’s culture, secures the well-being of its current residents and respects the rights of its most vulnerable residents.
